West Papua New Guinea, Indonesia Expedition Completed!!

(Courtesy of The World Navigator) The wild beauty of West Papua is that of legend, where fascinating cultures and untouched landscapes converge. Our journey was in the so-called “Bird’s Head Peninsula” including Raja Ampat, a marine paradise with turquoise waters and the world’s most spectacular reefs that contain more than 70% of the planet’s species of coral. Approximately one thousand islands comprise this archipelago, enhancing the specialization of the region’s unique flora and fauna, including the majestic bird of paradise. Other highlights includde venturing into Misool, home to towering limestone cliffs protecting hidden lagoons and secluded beaches providing breathtaking views, and experiencing the tranquil solitude of Cenderawasih Bay, with crystal-clear waters that provided encounters with gentle whale sharks and abundant marine biodiversity. As always, the Expedition Team tailored a daily selection of activities that included opportunities to dive, snorkel, kayak, hike, Zodiac cruise, visit local villages, and simply comb the pristine beaches. The third portion of the expedition traveled to the famous Spice Islands of Banda Neira and Banda Run, where colonial relics and traditional Papuan life are framed by volcanic landscapes.  After 3 glorious weeks, we ended our expedition in Darwin, Australia.

We visited a place we had never heard of and learned so much from the amazing expedition team. We have fallen in love with the people, the sea, and what this area has to offer.  Over the last month, we have seen flying foxes (giant bats) and Komodo dragons, and swam with whale sharks, and around amazing coral reefs.  We have snorkeled, dived, and kayaked around these islands with so much to discover.

It was an amazing adventure thanks to the wonderful expedition leaders.  We learned from scientists, dive masters, snorkel specialists, photographers, marine biologists, historians, ornithologists, geologists, and so much more.  To do this adventure this way has been such a wonderful experience.
